mpc 1000 pads failing
I used my mpc-1000 for about a year before the first three pads went out. These happened to be the pads used most often (kick, snare, hat). To get around this, i had to change the drum configurations so that the dead pads are not in use. Since then, i am down to my last three pads, with no possibilities for any other drum hits.
What is the problem with the pads? After researching, i found that many other people have this same experience. What is causing it, is a faulty design inside the pad. There is a thin sheet of carbon like, conductive material between the rubber pad, and the contact. This carbon sheet is glued to the contact at the corners. When played for a couple months, this sheet becomes un-glued and problems with pad sensitivity start to occur.
All i would need to do the repair myself would be the carbon like material, which i CAN NOT find ANYWHERE. I've looked on the internet for hours with no success. Akai does not stand behind there products. They outsource all of there repair and service to third party companies who charge hefty prices for there work. I would just pay for the repair but what's the point when a few months down the road they will just malfunction again. I have wrote a letter to akai pleading that they provide me with the conductive paper, or at least point me in the right direction as to how to order it, with no response.
My mpc, as well as everyone i've ever known that had a 1000, as well as every guitar center mpc 1000 demo, has had pads that don't work. The pads are the only reason to buy the mpc and they don't work. Rather than paying to fix the pads, i have purchased the korg drum pad controller, and the pad sensitivity, feel, and quality are 100 times better than the 1000. It is amazing how much better the korg pads are! The mpc's are cool for their complete lack of latency for recording, but the fireface 800 running reason at 48 samples buffer is just as responsive.
